Knowing how to disable Do Not Disturb on iPhone takes about two seconds. Open Control Center and tap the crescent moon icon in the Focus button.
It dims and switches to "Focus," meaning DND is off. If it keeps turning itself back on, a schedule or automation is the usual cause.
This works on iPhones running iOS 15 or later:
Most people searching for this fix are done here. The Control Center toggle is the quickest path, and for a one-time activation, it's all you need.
If the icon shows Work, Sleep, or Driving instead of Do Not Disturb, that is a different Focus mode running. Tap it. Turning it off will stop it from silencing your calls and notifications just the same.
Do Not Disturb silences incoming calls, alerts, and notification banners completely. Your screen stays dark and your phone makes no sound. It is not the same as putting your phone on silent.
Starting with iOS 15, Apple folded Do Not Disturb into a broader system called Focus. It is no longer a standalone switch. DND now lives alongside Work, Personal, Sleep, and other modes.
As reported by TechCrunch, the Focus system replaced the simpler Do Not Disturb toggle to give users the ability to set different notification preferences based on their activity, location, and time of day.
This change trips a lot of people up, particularly those who upgraded from an older iOS version and expected the same simple toggle.
The crescent moon icon in your status bar or on your Lock Screen means Do Not Disturb is running.
It appears any time DND is active, whether you switched it on manually or a schedule triggered it. Once the icon disappears after you tap the Focus button, DND is confirmed off.
People who support iPhone users regularly find that most are unaware there are multiple ways to turn off DND. Knowing more than one method matters when a Focus menu behaves unexpectedly.
Open Control Center and tap the crescent moon icon directly. The icon dims immediately. This is the fastest method and works in under two seconds.
This view is helpful when you have several Focus modes set up and want to be precise about which one you are disabling.
This route takes longer but lets you review schedules, allowed contacts, and other DND settings in the same place.
Say "Hey Siri, turn off Do Not Disturb." Siri handles this reliably and is useful when your hands are occupied or your screen is out of reach.
This is one of the most common points of confusion among iPhone users. The two features work differently. According to Wikipedia, silent mode disables ringtones and in some cases vibrating alerts, but still allows the device to receive and send calls and messages.
Do Not Disturb goes further by suppressing calls, alerts, and notification banners entirely.

Turning off DND has no effect on the silent switch. If your phone is on silent and you disable DND, it will still be muted. They are independent controls.
If DND returns after you turn it off, a background setting is triggering it. This is the most frequently reported issue with Focus mode, and it almost always comes down to one of three causes.
Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. Scroll to Set a Schedule. If a schedule is active, tap it and toggle it off or delete it.
Scheduled DND is the leading cause of the problem. Many users set one at some point and forget it is running.
Smart Activation lets iOS turn on DND automatically based on your habits and location. It can activate at unpredictable times. Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and toggle off Smart Activation.
Work, Sleep, and Driving modes can silence your phone in the same way DND does. Check each one under Settings > Focus for active schedules or automations.
Also check Share Across Devices under Settings > Focus. If this is on, activating DND on your Mac or iPad automatically mirrors it to your iPhone through iCloud.
If Do Not Disturb is confirmed off but notifications still are not arriving, the issue is outside of DND. In practice, app-level notification permissions are the most commonly overlooked cause once DND is ruled out.
Check these three things:
To disable Do Not Disturb on iPhone, the Control Center tap is the quickest fix. Persistent DND is almost always caused by a schedule or Smart Activation in Settings > Focus.
Silent mode and DND are separate controls. If notifications stay missing after DND is off, check per-app permissions next.
Usually yes. The built-in Clock app sounds alarms even with DND active. Third-party alarm apps may behave differently, so test yours in advance if you are relying on it for something critical.
It means Do Not Disturb is active. Open Control Center and tap the Focus button to turn it off. The icon will disappear from your status bar and Lock Screen once DND is disabled.
Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. Disable Smart Activation and remove any active schedules under Set a Schedule. Also turn off Share Across Devices so other Apple devices cannot trigger it on your iPhone.
By default, yes. You can allow calls from specific contacts under Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > Allow Notifications. You can also enable repeated calls to break through if the same person calls twice within three minutes.
On iOS 14, DND is a standalone toggle. Open Control Center and tap the crescent moon icon directly, or go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and toggle it off. The Focus system did not exist before iOS 15.
